Late August to October is spider season in the UK. The large spiders you see running across the floor at this time of year are mostly male house spiders that have left their webs to look for a mate. They have been living in the house, loft or garage all summer, and they simply become more visible.
Spider numbers also follow their food. A house with lots of flies, moths or other insects will attract more spiders, and cluttered garages, lofts, sheds and outbuildings give them plenty of undisturbed places to build webs and lay eggs.
The large, fast, dark brown spiders that appear in autumn are house spiders. They can look alarming, with a leg span of several centimetres, but they are harmless and very rarely bite. They build sheet-like webs in quiet corners, behind furniture and in garages.
Pale, thin spiders with very long legs, hanging in untidy webs in ceiling corners, are cellar spiders, often called daddy long-legs spiders. They are harmless to people and actually feed on other spiders.
False widows are dark brown with a round, glossy body and cream markings, and they have become common across the south of England, including South London. They are often found around window frames, sheds, garages, conservatories and outdoor furniture. Bites are uncommon and usually cause only mild symptoms similar to a bee sting, but they can be painful and occasionally become infected. Many people want them removed from areas where children play or where they are handled regularly.
Very small, bright red specks running across windowsills and walls in spring are usually clover mites rather than spiders. They are harmless but can appear in large numbers. Our mite treatment page explains how we deal with them.
Almost all UK spiders are harmless and play a useful role in keeping flies and other insects down. The only species that is a concern for most people is the false widow, and even then, bites are rare. Spider control is about reducing numbers where they have become a nuisance, or removing false widows from places where people could be bitten, not about wiping out every spider in the garden.
Hoovering up webs and spiders, clearing clutter from lofts and garages, sealing gaps around windows, doors and air vents, and reducing outside lights near doors (which attract the insects spiders feed on) all help. Popular remedies such as conkers and peppermint oil have little evidence behind them.
When numbers are high or false widows keep returning, professional treatment is more effective. It targets the webs, cracks and corners where spiders live and lay eggs, rather than just the ones you can see.
