Bromley covers more ground than any other London borough, and much of it is green belt: woodland, commons, farmland and golf courses, with Keston Common, Hayes Common and the Chislehurst commons all close to housing. That mix of countryside and suburb shapes the pest problems we see here.
Homes that back onto open land get more visits from rats, mice and squirrels than homes in the middle of a town. Large gardens with sheds, compost bins, ponds and mature trees give them food and shelter, and when the weather turns cold, the nearest warm building is usually a house or garage. The further south you go, towards Downe and Biggin Hill, the more properties sit beside fields, stables and paddocks, where rodents are part of the landscape.
Most rat problems here start outside. The signs are usually burrows under sheds, decking and patio slabs, runs worn through the lawn, gnawed compost bin lids and droppings near bird feeders.
Rats are drawn to spilled bird seed, compost heaps, chicken runs and pet food stored in garages. Clearing the rats is only part of the job: we also look at what is feeding them and where they are nesting, so the garden stops attracting new ones. Our rat control service covers the whole process.
Once rats are established outside, they look for a way in. Damaged air bricks, gaps around pipes and cables, and defects in old drains are the most common routes. Rodent proofing closes these off so the problem doesn’t keep returning every winter.
Farms, stables, smallholdings and homes with outbuildings on the southern edge of the borough face constant pressure from rats living in the surrounding fields and hedges. Here, regular visits usually work better than one-off treatments, and we plan treatment carefully around horses, pets and livestock.
Tree-lined streets and large gardens make the borough ideal territory for grey squirrels. Branches overhanging the roof give them an easy route to the eaves, and once inside, they shred insulation, chew wiring and wake you up at dawn. Because grey squirrels are an invasive species, they can’t legally be caught and released elsewhere, so removal needs to be done properly. From September onwards, calls about mice rise sharply across the borough. Field mice and house mice that spent the summer in hedges, gardens and farmland look for somewhere warm as the nights get colder, and a detached or semi-detached house with a gap under the kitchen door or a cracked air brick is an easy target. The first signs are usually droppings in the kitchen cupboards or behind the cooker, and scratching in the ceiling at night. A few changes make a big difference in larger gardens. Use bird feeders with trays that catch spilled seed, or take them down for a few weeks if rats are active. Keep compost bins closed and away from the house, store chicken feed and pet food in metal bins, and clear the space under sheds and decking where rats like to nest. Cut back branches within a couple of metres of the roof to cut off the squirrels’ route in. We’ll point out anything specific to your garden during the inspection.
The large Victorian, Edwardian and interwar houses in these areas have suspended timber floors, old air bricks, cellars and roof spaces with plenty of gaps. Mice move easily through the voids between floors and walls, often without anyone noticing until droppings turn up in the kitchen. The wool carpets and rugs common in older family homes can also be a target for carpet and clothes moths, particularly in spare rooms, lofts and wardrobes that aren’t opened every day.
The north-west corner of the borough, around Penge, Anerley and the edge of Crystal Palace Park, is more densely built, with terraces, conversions and blocks of flats. Here, mice moving between neighbouring homes and bed bugs in flats and shared houses are more common calls than garden rats. Treating neighbouring properties at the same time usually gives the best result, and we’re happy to work with landlords and managing agents to arrange it.
The town centre, around the High Street and The Glades, has a large number of restaurants, cafes, shops and offices, and there are more businesses along the local high streets across the borough. Food businesses in particular need to show environmental health officers that pests are being controlled.
