Most people realise they have mice in the house before they ever see one. These are the signs we are asked about most often.
Mouse droppings are dark, around the size of a grain of rice and usually found in small clusters. Check inside kitchen cupboards, behind the cooker and fridge, under the sink and along skirting boards. Nibbled food packaging, shredded paper and chewed cable sleeves are other common signs. If you suspect mice but can’t find droppings, look behind the kickboards under your kitchen units, as this is where they often move and nest out of sight.
Mice are most active at night, so light scratching or scurrying in the walls, ceiling void or under the floorboards after dark is a strong clue. Heavier thumping is more likely to be rats, and noise in the loft early in the morning often points to squirrels. Our rodent control page explains how to tell them apart.
An established mouse problem has a stale, musty smell that is strongest in enclosed spaces such as cupboards, airing cupboards and under-stair storage. It comes from urine, and it usually means the mice have been there for a while.
Usually more than one. House mice breed quickly: a female can produce a new litter every few weeks, and young mice are ready to breed themselves at around six weeks old. Mice are also careful about staying out of sight, so by the time one is seen running across the kitchen floor in daylight, there is often an established group nearby.
That is why a single trap under the sink rarely solves the problem. It may catch the mouse you saw, but it does nothing about the nest or the gap they came through.
Mice need very little space to get in, squeezing through gaps of around 6mm. Common entry points include gaps around pipes and cables where they pass through walls, damaged air bricks, worn door and garage seals, and holes left behind after plumbing or kitchen work.
Housing plays a big part. In the terraced and semi-detached streets of Bexleyheath, Crayford, Erith and Belvedere, and across Bromley and Lewisham, homes often share wall cavities, roof spaces and floor voids. Mice move along these from house to house, which is why a problem can start next door and end up in your kitchen. In blocks of flats, they travel through service risers and pipe ducts, so a treatment often works best when neighbours are involved too.
Mice move indoors most in autumn and winter, looking for warmth and food, but they can arrive at any time of year. Seeing mice in summer usually means they already have a reliable way in and a steady food source.
If you have searched for how to get rid of mice, you will have found plenty of quick fixes. Most of them struggle for the same reasons.
Traps catch individual mice, but they don’t find the nest or the entry point, so new mice keep arriving. Mice are also wary of new objects and will often avoid traps placed in the wrong spot. Plug-in ultrasonic repellers are popular, but there is little evidence that they keep mice away over time. Poison bought over the counter can leave mice dying under floorboards, where the smell becomes a new problem, and it carries risks for pets and children if it is not placed securely.

Proofing does most of the work, but a few habits make your home far less attractive to mice. Store dry food such as cereal, rice and pet food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs behind appliances, and keep clutter out of cupboards and under-stair spaces where mice like to nest. Check that garage doors and back doors close without a gap at the bottom, and keep bird feeders away from the walls of the house.

In rented property, responsibility for mice usually depends on the cause. Where mice are getting in through gaps in the structure or damaged drains and air bricks, it is generally the landlord’s responsibility to deal with it. Check your tenancy agreement, and let your landlord or letting agent know as soon as you see signs. Very rarely. A house gives mice warmth, shelter and food, so once they are settled there is little reason for them to leave. The problem usually grows until the mice are treated and the gaps are sealed.
